Planning a Pregnancy

Leila is happy to see women who are planning a pregnancy for pre-pregnancy counselling, especially if there are any complicated medical issues or a high risk of a chromosomal or genetic disorder based on the family history or ethnic background. Pre-pregnancy care helps identify issues that may affect a woman’s pregnancy, so that steps can be taken to manage potential problems prior to pregnancy.

It is recommended to commence taking a daily Folate supplement one month prior to conceiving to reduce the risk of neural tube defect in the fetus. Folate supplements are available from any chemist, or may be taken as part of a pregnancy multi-vitamin.

Antenatal

The first appointment is generally 30 min – 45 min, and is done at 8 to 10 weeks of pregnancy. This visit involves a full medical check-up and planning for pregnancy. Subsequent appointments are generally 20 minutes and are recommend every 4 -6 weeks until 28 weeks, every 2-3 weeks until 36 weeks, and then weekly until delivery.

Postnatal

A Postnatal visit will be scheduled at 6 weeks post-partum (birth of the baby) to check the health of the mother & baby, discuss different types of contraception, to perform a pap smear (if indicated) and plan for the next pregnancy.
